Sacred Valley

マチュピチュはクスコの北西約80キロ、標高約2430メートルの山の上に築かれたインカ帝国の「空中都市」だ。
15世紀半ば、皇帝パチャクティによって造られたとみられている。
1911年にアメリカの歴史家ハイラム・ビンガムによって「発見」されるまで、
スペインの征服者にも知られることなくそのままになっていたため、破壊を免れてきた。皇帝の離宮のようなものだったとも考えられているが、
記録や伝承など一切残っていないので、用途などはわかっていない。
遺跡の建造物には様々な名がついているが、多くは「発見者」のビンガムが付けた名で、あくまでも通称。
