チチェン・イッツァ
| ユカタン北東部に残る、古典期末のマヤ地域最大の都市の一つ。遺跡は25平方キロに及ぶ。当時の建築技術の水準の高さを示す「ククルカンのピラミッド」、天文台などの存在により、最も有名なマヤ遺跡となっている。都市は9-10世紀頃に全盛期を迎える。南側の「旧チチェン」とそれ以外の部分とに建築的特徴が分けられる。南側の「旧チチェン」にはユカタン北部のウシュマルやカバーなどと同じ「プーク」様式の建造物があり、その他の部分はメキシコ中央高原、とくにトルテカ族の都トゥーラと多くの共通点をもつ建造物でしめられている。中央高原で信奉されていた羽毛のある蛇=ケツァルコアトルのマヤ版であるククルカンが信仰されていたことなどから、「旧チチェン」時代の後に、トルテカ族の侵入があり、トルテカの統治によって繁栄したという説が広く受け入れられていたが、近年は「旧チチェン」とその他のエリアに明確な時代的な前後関係などが確認できないことなどから、トルテカ族の直接的侵入などを疑問視する研究者も多いようだ。1991年と2007年の二度訪れたが、1991年にはどの建物にも自由に出入りできたのが、2007年にはほとんどが立ち入り禁止になっていた。 |
